April Kim, Piano

A native of Minnesota, Dr. April Ryun Kim graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.M. in piano performance with a collaborative emphasis. She earned a M.M. in solo and collaborative performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and completed a D.M.A. in piano performance at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Her former teachers have included Kent McWilliams, Kathryn Brown, Anita Pontremoli, and Diane Helfers Petrella. She is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at St. Olaf College. ​

 

Dr. Kim has given numerous performances as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and chamber musician. She has been featured as a soloist in the MasterWorks Festival Honors Recital and with the St. Olaf Orchestra. She has also received winning awards from competitions such as Thursday Musical and Schubert Club. Having an enthusiasm for new music, she has performed in various new music ensembles including the Musica Nova ensemble at UMKC, working with highly regarded composers such as Zhou Long and Tania León. ​

 

Dr. Kim has been invited to present her research at numerous events such as the Gustavus Music Colloquium Series in February 2018 and the 2018 MMTA (Minnesota Music Teachers Association) Convention. She was a recipient of the UMKC Women’s Council Graduate Assistance Fund Award in 2017 to present at the 2017 MTNA Collegiate Chapters Piano Pedagogy Symposium. Additionally, she has presented at the 2018 MTNA Collegiate Chapters Piano Pedagogy Symposium, several CMS Regional Conferences, and recently has been invited to present at the 2019 Music By Women Festival, the 2019 Women Composers Festival at Hartford, and the 2019 CMS International Conference. ​

 

Outside of her musical endeavors, Kim enjoys church fellowship activities and spending time with her family and friends.
