COMPOSER
Jared Steven Coffin
Jared Steven Coffin is a composer and sound artist, who’s music is representative of and influenced by specific place, space, and time. He takes influence from people and places, then infuses the cultural, social, and political context of the time, to create music and sounds that represent, reflect, and examine. This process forms structures, atmospheres, and experiences for future audiences and performers to find meaning and understanding through organized sound.
His recent projects engage the interconnection between nature and humanity. This takes place in the metaphorical (humanity’s place in nature), the tangible (the management of nature and its resources), and the sonic (the polyphony of natural and human-made sounds).
In the mediums of notated music and recorded sound, Jared’s work is characterized by minimalist textures, ambient soundscapes, overlapping rhythms, lopsided groove, and Post-Modern eclecticism.
Jared has been awarded or participated in the Anchorage Museum Sound Residency, Eric Stokes Earth's Best in Tune Award, Nautilus Music Theater Composer Librettist Studio, Lehigh & ACDA Choral Composers Forum, Grace University Lutheran Composer in Residence, & Hinge Arts Residency.
Jared holds a MA in Composition from the University of Minnesota and a MM in Music Education from Boston University.

PROGRAM NOTES
from the composer
Whitewater - for chamber ensemble in four movements
"In April 2021, I spent three days camping and turkey hunting in, and around, the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area. The Whitewater WMA is not the isolated wilderness that you may find in northern Minnesota, instead it is a diverse interspersion of forests, wetlands, farmlands, roads, and communities that create habitat for wildlife in conjunction with human presence. Being there, you witness the active management needed to conserve wildlife habitat and the thriving ecosystems that can be maintained through this diligent work. The multi-movement work, Whitewater, evokes the soundscape of trains, machinery, bird calls, and rustling leaves that soundtrack the experience of being in the WMA, and musically explores the complicated, but necessary, weighing of human needs and wildlife conservation." -Jared Steven Coffin
